I worked for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater for a couple of seasons. At that time, the director of the company insisted on re-designing the company’s identifier every year. This was, and is, obviously a very bad idea, possibly one of the factors that led to bankruptcy two seasons after we parted company. The silver lining was that I wound up creating a variety of marks for the company. Most of my colleagues agree that the marquee device above is the best of all these various solutions, but is was never used by the client.
